Participants were introduced to the concept of Income Generating Activities (IGAs) and their critical role in reducing dependence on external funding while promoting productivity and self-reliance.

A key focus of the day was understanding how institutions can maximize the use of existing resources. Through brainstorming sessions, participants identified various forms of idle capacity within TVET institutions, including infrastructure, equipment, workshops, and human resources. The discussions emphasized the need to align institutional strengths with market demands and community needs.

The training also explored financing options for start-up IGAs, enabling participants to understand potential sources of funding and evaluate available opportunities for enterprise development. Staff members were further equipped with simple market assessment tools to help determine products and services that communities are willing to pay for.

Participants follow proceedings as Senior Vocational and Technical Education Officer (SVTEO) – IGA TVET, Mr. Dickson Kivindu makes a presentation during the Income Generating Activity Capacity Building Workshop held at Dr Daniel Wako Murende TVC.

One of the highlights of the day was a presentation on developing viable IGA concept notes and business cases. Participants learned how to transform innovative ideas into structured business concepts capable of generating sustainable income. The afternoon session provided an opportunity for departments and institutions to work collaboratively in refining enterprise ideas into practical business cases and concept notes.

Day Two: Enterprise Development, Management and Implementation

The second day began with a recap of key lessons learned during the first day. Participants reflected on the importance of enterprise development in strengthening the financial sustainability of TVET institutions.

Departments then presented their proposed enterprise ideas, showcasing innovative concepts developed during the workshop. These presentations provided a platform for peer learning and engagement with facilitators from the State Department for TVET, who offered guidance and feedback to improve the proposed ventures.

Recognizing that successful enterprises require more than good ideas, participants received training on marketing, customer service, and branding. The session emphasized the importance of understanding customer needs, developing effective marketing strategies, and building strong institutional brands that can compete effectively in the market.

Further discussions focused on governance and management of IGAs. Participants examined strategies for establishing proper governance structures, promoting accountability, and minimizing operational risks. The training also highlighted the significance of monitoring and evaluation in ensuring quality control, sustainability, and continuous improvement of enterprise activities.

The final technical session addressed business planning for TVET IGAs. Participants gained practical skills in preparing simple business plans, estimating start-up capital requirements, calculating operational costs, and assessing profitability.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants had developed a clear roadmap for enterprise development within their respective departments and institutions. The training delivered several key outputs, including:

Department-level IGA concept notes.

A comprehensive list of institutional idle capacities.

A prioritized list of viable enterprise opportunities.

Draft action plans for implementation.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Messo challenged TVET institutions across the country to embrace Income Generating Activities as a strategic avenue for enhancing institutional revenue and sustainability. She emphasized that well-managed enterprises can supplement government funding, support the acquisition and maintenance of training equipment, and strengthen the overall capacity of institutions to deliver quality training.

Ms. Messo further noted that IGAs provide trainees with valuable opportunities to acquire practical skills and experience real-life work scenarios within their areas of specialization. By participating in enterprise activities, trainees can bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practice, enhancing their employability, entrepreneurial mindset, and readiness for the job market. She encouraged institutions to leverage their available resources, expertise, and infrastructure to establish viable enterprises that benefit both the institution and the trainees.

Advancing the TVET Sustainability Agenda

The capacity-building programme underscores the commitment of the State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training and Dr. Daniel Wako Technical and Vocational College to promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and financial sustainability within the TVET sector.

By empowering staff to identify and utilize idle institutional capacity, the workshop laid a strong foundation for the creation of sustainable income-generating ventures that will not only enhance institutional resilience but also strengthen the college’s contribution to community development and economic growth.

<p class="has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color
